Manager Ronald Koeman introduces a renewed squad with thirteen changes and major injury absences ahead of their Group F debut in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The head coach of the Netherlands national football team, Ronald Koeman, officially announced today the final 26-player roster for the upcoming World Cup 2026, confirming a profound structural overhaul of the squad.

The strategic selection presented by the coaching staff marks a decisive turning point for the European squad. The official roster reveals a total of 13 modifications compared to the team that competed in the previous European Championship, signaling a deep structural restructuring.

Coach Ronald Koeman has prioritized a balanced formula, mixing the extensive international experience of consolidated veteran leaders with the dynamic energy and tactical versatility of emerging young talents from both local and foreign football leagues.

Virgil van Dijk, the prominent central defender from English club Liverpool, will wear the captain’s armband and lead the group during this campaign. Supporting him in key tactical roles are fundamental pillars of the national team, including midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The talented midfielder returns to the national squad dynamics after successfully recovering from physical complications that kept him sidelined. Forward Cody Gakpo also joins the frontline to spearhead the offensive strategy during the tournament.

However, the definitive compilation of this final list was severely conditioned by unexpected medical emergencies and physical setbacks. Among the most notable absences are young midfielder Xavi Simons and veteran defender Stefan de Vrij, who was officially ruled out after sustaining a physical injury during his last club match appearance. Furthermore, central defender Matthijs de Ligt remains completely excluded from the World Cup process due to a recent surgical intervention that requires extended recovery.

From a purely technical standpoint, the manager made the executive decision to omit key players who participated in previous national team cycles, such as fullback Jeremie Frimpong and forward Joshua Zirkzee. The technical staff preferred profiles that integrate more seamlessly and adapt with precision to the collective tactical system designed specifically for this global championship.

The Netherlands national football team is drawn in Group F of the global tournament against diverse international opponents from different continental confederations.

The squad is scheduled to make its official debut on June 14 when they face Japan in the city of Dallas. Afterwards, the Dutch team will travel to Houston to play against Sweden on June 20, before concluding the competitive group stage on June 25 against Tunisia in Dallas. The coaching staff will immediately begin intensive preparation works focused on fostering tactical cohesion.
